Under the Surface

Work in progress

With the idea of fairies and sprites, and undefined consciousnesses that emerge from places playing on my mind, along with the dark, murky parts of the human mind, this sketch emerged from my subconscious. I feel it’s probably a mutation of the iconic Apocalypse Now image.

I’ve never seen the film, so this image symbolises different things to me than it would if I had. I’m not much of a film or fiction person, but I’d like to see it… the visuals look very cool. Perhaps after this project is finished.

Hue & Value shifts, and some slight adjustments to the linework:

Wash

As I begin to work on it, and ask myself what the meaning is, the iceberg begins to tease itself out.

Eventually, I sit down to write out my feelings, and tease out the nuance.

What emerges is that this seems to be about the self deceptions hidden in the base of your psyche, and how if you don’t deal with them they’ll deal with you. Your inner demons are only as demonic as you allow them to be – by ignoring them you let them run rampant and become increasingly distorted, trapping more internal resources.

There’s a trickster element to them, which explains the hidden smile.

And peace appears to lie through them, not away from them.

The shadow.
