In summer 2019, having finally improved a long term illness through diet to the point I could get back to work, this drawing emerged.
Initial sketch
At this point I’d come to question a lot of things, including my years of trying to escape the rat race by being a commercial digital artist.
I’d strayed from my ballpoint and started using lead for the first time in years.
In hindsight, I suppose it’s not insignificant that it represents an ideal of peak health and vitality… but strangely mutated, openings revealing the inner workings, a god of metabolism.
Red was the way to go
I removed the background for print, but then decided it was contributing something I liked
considering my approach to drapery and feeling out different degrees of musculature
I decided to head somewhat towards classicism with the drapery
Digital overpainting
Tweaking hues to be more interesting, and provide a more desaturated bed for picking out areas of saturation.
Experimenting with more abstract or graphic forms to juxtapose with the figure. However, I’m not sure they carry any real meaning. might be time for a bit more thought.
